These paintings come straight from the spirit. I believe deeply in the dream world, that the soul dwells, heals, and grows here and that our dreams are an extension of our lives. My art is almost always an attempt to depict the realm between fantasy and reality, and this series is the result of my meditations and dreams from the time I recently spent at the beach.

Kathy--your paintings look so free--I love them. I'm trying to feel more free when I paint--any tips?

Thank you so much, ladies! I feel like I used to paint very tightly, but last year, in an attempt to remedy that, I took an abstract painting class with Melissa Payne Baker. Melissa, you may recall, was featured on my Arts in Atlanta series and is a very gifted young painter and wonderful teacher. She taught us techniques with a palette knife and forever changed the way I approach a new painting. So much of my ability to actually paint freely, however, comes directly from my inspiration. I find that when I am inspired, the process flows from me and that seems evident in the result. When I am not truly inspired by a vision, the painting feels forced and laborious. My surroundings seem to have the greatest impact on me and, when I am struck by something in nature, such as color or sounds, ideas and images flood my imagination. Travel is a great source of inspiration, as is spending time with my loved ones. These things make me happy and that is what inspires me to create and allows me to work intuitively and freely.
