Dans Ma Maison, L'Art Transforme Mon Ame

"In My House Art Transforms My Soul." I made this house in response for several prompts this week: Arty Girlz Butterfly Challenge, Crazy Amigo's Faces Challenge, Ma Maison's Bijou Challenge ( I promise there is a jewel in the compass center; it just didn't show up well in the scan)and for One Powerful Hour's Architecture Challenge, and I'm not sure that I'm entirely pleased with it. If you click on the image or change your zoom, you can see the details better. I enjoyed the process, especially the texturing, and I like the theme, the colors, and the symbols. All the negative space around the house bothers me, though. Maybe I'm just a gaudy woman, but I've I've always subscribed to the theory that too much is never enough. I must study it for a while and see if I need to alter it in some way. This morning, probably due to the copious amounts of coffee I drank, I had a minor (but happy) cropping accident, which I will post later when I get home from school. Anyway, try to picture this: lop off the house part of this piece and enlarge the butterfly girl, making it a long horizontal image. I like that composition so much better, and I think it will become a painting someday. Please leave a comment and tell me what you think I should do about this page. I think a bit of collaboration would help.

Love,
Alberta

(Later)Okay, here's what she looks like cropped. I think she would make a great blog banner. I wish I knew how to make a banner that would extend all the way across my blog, Anyone, anyone?

Oh, Albeta! I agree . . . I love the message, the color, the texture and the composition. The negative space doesn't bother me; but I could see how it could be a bother to you. Maybe adding a few more flowers on the bottom/sides might help you like the space better.

I DO see the image of the butterfly-faced lady standing totally on it's own. Brilliant!

Can't wait to see what happens.\
Hugs,
Terri :) xoxoxo
PS - I DO see the little, sparkly jewel!

I think that this is beautiful and like the negative space very much - if anything, I think she needs more space around her...I wonder what would happen if you made her "body" (the house, as i see it) much smaller in relation to the head, OR make the house much smaller and separate, changed her angle and put her in flight in the negative space - as when I think about transformation and wings, I think movement...
Very lovely to look at though, I love this technique and the colours, as ever, are a joy to behold x

I adore her as is, Alberta! If you're perplexed and feel it needs "something", I think adding some interest (not overpowering though) to the negative space (like everyone else has mentioned)...such as some gesso resist with an overcoating of that same color. It would just add some depth, I think.

Just a thought.

Peace, Love & Art,

I'm good with it just the way it is. But if it is a journal page, you might just wait until you are inspired to add. I don't think journal pages have to be considered complete.

wow...awesome work! i bet your mind will swirl with ideas when you're at school! i know you'll know just what you want to do to finish it up when you get home. can't wait to see how it tranforms.

I think you're all right. I especially like the idea of her flying, and I think the negative space would be great for journaling, perhaps with 2 opposing corniers gessoed and floral-ized. Hmmm... I wonder if I can duck out of school and go home to play with Miss Butterfly McQueen...

First, I LOVE your idea of making this a horizontal image. And, I am a FIRM believer that whatever makes the artist happy, makes for a better work!
If it were mine, in my style, I'd probably add lots more flowers to the background, perhaps find a place or two to hide a couple tiny butterflies, and then I'd (funky style)journal all over the empty space....but that's just what I always seem to do, so there's no secret wisdom there! ...by the way...I love the house as is,and think it would look great detached from the background, too....maybe you should turn this into several variations on a theme... XOXO

Maybe a few more flowers around the bottom, but it's really lovely as is!
I do agree that just the face/butterfly portion horizontally would make a fabulous painting on it's own! Great work getting in all the elements for so many challenges.

Wow! As usual your colors knock my socks off! Looking forward to seeing what you end up with ... love it the way it is. Also see *her* alone. Too many decisions for me!

I tend to agree with Barbara about the house. I love the imagery you use though and the butterfly lady is beautiful in thge second pic. As for the negative space, I think I would doodle it with blck and white pens (which you do so masterfully anyway!).
It has so many possibilities - would make a superb business card too!
