Layers and Texture

Recital
The Recital 12" X 12" mixed media for Theme Thursday

This little painting was the last piece I completed for the Buckhead Arts Festival, and it's all about the color and texture. I started this one by slathering on thick- bodied acrylic paint with a big palette knife, and I kept building layers until I was pleased with the basic composition. Then, I added some shading with oil pastels and inks and, at the very last minute, I added some charcoal lines, which seemed to pull the whole thing together, for some reason. There's something edgy about black charcoal that just does it for me.

Oh the only way this could be better is if it was on a really big canvas! Love the colours, rich and deep and truly there is something about adding that touch of charcoal that gives it the final punch. Beautifully done, they are going to love it at the Arts Festival.

Gorgeous , Kathy. I enlarged it to get a really good look at the charcoal and it really does add something special to the overall look.
