Statue of Flibberty

Statue of Flibberty

(for Creative Therapy, Crazy Amigos, and Created By Hand) 14 " X 14" mixed media on canvas; available at The Gilded Lily.

This piece is started with a photo of my wig-head sculpture Ava and a recyled painting that I wasn't terribly pleased with. (You can see Ava as Catrina here.) After I sanded and roughed up the background to make some of the other elements disappear, I painted the rest of the background with colors of the same intensity as the remaining red and yellow that you can still see. The I glued on an enlarged a photo of Ava and painted her orange, deepening the hue with ink and charcoal. I thought I'd give her a crown and make her queen, but then I noticed the resemblence to Our Lady Liberty, so I decided to go with it. I added a few flourishes and doodles to balance the bright white in the crown and there she is: Ava in yet another incarnation!

Well, this is really clever--but I have to say what I really like was your link to Catrina and the Dia de los Muertos piece!!

No matter the setting, Ava ROCKS!!! Your talents and creativity have created yet another great piece. The color burs surrounding her remind me of the 4th of July fireworks that surround her over the Hudson River. Fabulous, Kathy!!! Hugs, Terri xoxo

1. flibberty jibbet A north west England name for someone who is flashy and female, flaunting sexually. The term comes from the way someone "dances" about when being hung... hence the reference to "jibbet", or gallows
"Look at her posing in front of those men, she is a right flibberty jibbet"...

Love it, Talented One. And thank you for the comment from last week on the re-posting of one of our favorite art journal pages of mine. It touched me deep inside. Big Love to you and I hope the summer is treating you right !
